If you suspect you or someone in your family has been exposed to asbestos, you need to be aware of any changes in your health and contact your doctor immediately. And it's very important that you tell your doctor about your exposure to asbestos so he/she can make an accurate diagnosis.

There are four common symptoms that can indicate mesothelioma:

1. Chest pain (in either side of the chest)

2. Shortness of breath

3.  Weight loss

4. Abdominal pain or swelling

Patients also report difficulty in swallowing, a persistent cough, fever and sweating.

Any or all of these can also be symptoms of other illnesses and also of other types of cancer, so it's vitally important for anyone who's had any type of exposure to asbestos to seek qualified medical advice if any of these symptoms appears.

Stages in Mesothelioma

Most cancers progress through well-defined stages and doctors can tailor treatment for each stage. As always, remember, that the earlier the cancer is detected, the better the chances of a successful treatment.

1. Detection of the cancer

2. The cancer moves from the mesothelium to lymph nodes

3. The cancer spreads to surrounding organs

4. Cancer spreads to other organs not part of the heart, abdomen or lung. These can include the liver, pancreas and colon.
